Chinese Class Review 9/9/17

Basic Chinese - Pinyin 7 & 8. Tone Pairs and the compound finals A group and E group

Homework for this week is to practice tone pairs selected from the JW Language app. We noticed that many of you have problem with 2-3, 3-2, and some 4th tones combos. Please review the 2nd tone video and 3rd tone video. Be sure that your 3rd tone doesn't rise up as the 2nd tone does. We also noticed that for some reason many of you allow the first part of the tone pair affect the second part of the tone pair. For instance, many of you pronounce 2-3 as 2-2 or pronounce 2-2 as 1-2. Try to avoid it.

If it makes it easier you can substitute the Chinese words in the Tone Pairs charts with the English tone words. For instance, use "What?", "Uh" for 2-3 combos.

We also learned about the compound finals from the A group and E group. You can review the videos below.

One very important note I hope you picked up is that every final IS DISTINCTLY DIFFERENT from each other. Don't pronounce the A the same way in all finals in the A group.

One side note is that when you record yourselves on WeChat, do just one tone at a time. That makes it easier for sister Chiang to listen to you. Thanks folks!

JW Language - Meeting Invitiation and Presenting a Topic
