Chinese Class Review 12/16/17

JW Language - Meetings 3

We learned phrases and expressions about our meetings. Here are some highlights.

1. Under the section of Public Talk:

Sentence 2: The public talk lasts thirty minutes. The proper Chinese translation should be 公众演讲长30分钟。

2. Under the section of speaker:

Sentence: Today's speaker is visiting from a nearby congregation. Please note that the translation here is 今天的讲者是邻近会众的弟兄。I thought this is an excellent translation before it eliminates the potential mistake of using 从. You can simply substitute 邻近 with the real name of the congregation where the visiting speaker is from.

JW Language - Introducing Songs & Prayers

We learned phrases and expressions about songs and prayers. Here are some highlights.

1. 诗歌 in English is more like ode, songs used in religious gatherings. For songs you listen to on the radio it's just 歌. Music is 音乐(Yīn Yùe). To ask someone what kind of songs / music do you listen to? you can say 你喜欢听什么歌 / 音乐?(Nĭ Xĭhuān Tīng Shĕnme Gē / Yīnyùe nē?)

2. Opening = 开始的;Closing = 结束的.

3. New sentence structure: 先 ...... 然后 ...... (First ...., then... ). Example: 我们先吃饭,然后吃冰淇淋 (We have our meals first, then we can have deserts).

Chinese Class Review 12/2/17

Basic Chinese - Viewpoint Questions 1 & 2

We went into detail on the lesson Asking Questions in JW Language app. We are interested in "What do you think" in particular. Usually we say 你认为 or 你觉得. Although the character 想 can mean "think", we hardly use it in "What do you think". Instead it usually means "want" or "would like to" as in 我想吃冰淇淋(I want to eat ice-cream).

We also learned a new question word that is almost always at the end of a viewpoint question: 呢.

JW Language - Personal Pronoun

We reviewed a little bit about personal pronouns in Chinese: 我,你,您,他,她,它,牠,祂. We also learned my/mine, your/yours, his, her, and its. We simply need to add 的 to the Chinese personal pronouns above. For instance, my/mine is 我的; his is 他的.

JW Language - Actions

We learned about different sentence structures when it comes to describing everyday actions.
