Chinese Class Review 10/28/17
Basic Chinese - Chinese Measure Words 1 & 2
We covered a bunch of measure words in Chinese. There are measure words in English, too. For instance, the word "slice" in "a slice of bread" is a measure words, the same with "piece" in "a piece of cake". There are potentially dozens if not hundreds of measure words in Chinese. Please don't panic or try to remember every single one of them. You don't have to. As you read more you'll pick them up one by one. The important thing is - read more.
Your homework for Basic Chinese this week is to look for ten measure words in Chinese in your Pinyin publications - the Pinyin Watchtower, Life & Ministry Meeting Workbook, the Bible Teach book, etc.

We covered some expressions and phrases that are frequently used in meetings and Bible studies. Please remember, 要点(Yàodiăn) literally means "important point" so you can't say 很重要的要点(Hĕn
Zhòngyào de Yàodiăn) because you'd be saying "a very important important point".

We covered some expressions and phrases that are also frequently used in meetings and Bible studies. Here are some points we discussed in class:
1. 阅读 means to read something; 朗读 means to read something aloud.
2. 朗读 and 诵读 mean exactly the same thing.
3. A common mistake I observed when a Chinese learner introduces a scripture or a Bible book, often times he adds 书(Shū) right after the name of the Bible book, thinking that it's the same of saying "the book of..." in English. DON'T DO IT! Simply say the name of the Bible in Chinese. For instance, the book of Proverbs is 箴言(Zhēnyán), DON'T say 箴言书(Zhēnyán Shū).
The homework for JW Language class this week is just continue practice your presentations in the field.

The word for "Ten thousands" in Chinese is 万 wàn
"One hundred thousands" is 十万 shíwàn
"One million" is 百万 báiwàn

Basic Chinese - Chinese Numbers 1 and 2

We covered 1 to 100. One important point to keep in mind:
The Chinese character of the number 2is 二(èr) , but when you want to say two people you have to say 两 (lĭang). Please see the Grammar section of the JW Language app for more examples.
